CPSC Opening Beijing Office

Comments Off

This week the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission announced that they will soon be opening the doors of their first overseas office in Beijing, China.

The office is being opened as part of an effort to ramp up cooperation between U.S. and China to better ensure product quality and safety.

With about 45 percent of all consumer good and about 90 percent of all toys sold in the U.S. being made in China it is extremely important that the CPSC does everything they can to ensure that Cghinese-made goods are safe.

In 2009 the CPSC established an office to help educate and train Chinese manufacturers on proper U.S. product safety standards. The program seems to have made a significant impact on product safety as the number of recalled Chinese products drastically fell from 346 in 2008 to 220 in 2009, but there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Hopefully with the opening of the new office we will see even greater improvement in the coming years.
