DePuy Names New President

Comments Off

A 20-year veteran has taken over the top position at DePuy Orthopedics. Andrew Ekdahl will fill the void left by former president David Floyd who resigned from the position in March amid swirling concerns and massive expenses over the recall the company’s ASR hip replacement device.

Ekdahl’s experience will be put to the test as the company attempts to rebound from the messy legal troubles and the integrate J&J’s recently acquired Synthes.

The company had fared fairly well under the previous regime, up until last August, when the DePuy announced the recall of the ASR hip replacement system, following out cries from consumer advocates of higher than normal failure rates.

Since then thousands of hip implant lawsuits have piled up against the device manufacturer alleging that despite being aware of inherit design flaws DePuy continue to sell and promote the defective device.

Legal fees and settlements cost the company over $1 billion in 2010 alone and the worst is likely yet to come.
